Birdwood is a specialist fruit tree nursery supplying accredited laboratory testing soil pathogen free containerised fruit trees to commercial growers and retail nurseries throughout Australia and the world.

All fruit trees are fully containerised, grown on raised welded mesh benches in steam pasteurised potting mix and irrigated with chlorinated recycled water.

Birdwood Nursery is also a foundation member of two nationally accredited nursery health programmes namely the "Avocado Nursery Voluntary Accreditation Scheme" established 1978 (ANVAS) and the "Nursery Industry Accreditation Scheme Australia" established 1993 (NIASA). Potting mix and root samples are regularly tested to ensure freedom from harmful soil borne pathogens namely phythopthera spp., pythium, rhizoctonia, fusarium and verticillium.

In-house monitoring of irrigant using young lupin plant baiting is an important safeguard in detection of possible contaminants entering the nursery via irrigation water.

Location: South East Queensland, Australia, longitude 153° latitude 26° 40'.

Birdwood Nursery is situated just south of Nambour in the picturesque hinterland of the Sunshine Coast, an easy 1 hour freeway drive from Brisbane.

The mild subtropical climate with short cool to cold winters and hot humid summers enables a full range of fruit tree types to be grown from tropical Mango and Carambola to traditional temperate Stone and Pomme Fruits.

Mean maximum 25.2°C, mean minimum 13.6°C, mean RH 76%, mean annual rainfall 1870mm, highest temperature recorded 40.5°C screen, lowest temperature recorded -2.9°C.

History: Birdwood Nursery was established in 1978 primarily to provide soil pathogen free fruit trees due to large losses experienced by local fruit orchardists planting disease infested nursery stock namely Avocado, Citrus, Custard Apple (Annona), Passionfruit (Sweet Granadilla), Stone Fruit, Papaw (Papaya) and Persimmon (Kaki).

After a rapid initial growth phase during the first 6 years, Birdwood Nursery has had a steady growth rate on average of 10% per year that has kept pace with produce demand and development of propagation and growing technology within the nursery.

Also selections of superior rootstocks from within the Sunshine Coast regions, variable weather conditions, extreme soil types and high endemic disease presence have contributed to Birdwood Nursery's commercial success. Superior rootstocks such as "Nemasun" Peach rootstock and "Kakisun" Persimmon rootstock are now proving their worth throughout Australia and are currently being testing all over the world. Also a range of Avocado rootstocks are under test.
